→ Arrival

Waking up in the warehouse is extremely uncomfortable. It’s warm, stifling even, and as you open your eyes, you realize two things: you’re somehow standing and you’re not alone. The room is filled with people grouped at its center, and like you, they are blinking into consciousness and wearing similar expressions of confusion and distress. To the left and right there are closed doors, a man and woman at both; their clothing and demeanour are widely different. The left is clearly upper class while the right is lower class. At the top of the room is a stage adorned in red, white, and blue banners with NFFA in block letters so large that it’s visible from the very back. What is the NFFA, you ask? Within minutes, a man that gives off a ‘Republican senator’ vibe steps up to the podium and begins to speak.
Blessed be our New Founding Fathers for letting us Purge and cleanse our souls. Blessed be America, a nation reborn. Hello and welcome to the city. After fifteen successful purges, we are at a standstill. The New Founding Fathers have found a way to bring you here to promote a higher response in participation. Annually, for one night, any and all crime is legal, including murder. Everyone has the right to purge, and in doing so, you become the best you that you can be. During peace times, crime is lower than five percent and United States citizens know true harmony.

The New Founding Fathers have assessed our Annual Purge laws and adjusted them to allow for this unwanted change. In a three month cycle, all citizens will celebrate a time of peace, preparation, and purge. All previous Purge Night guidelines still apply. This will continue until the Nation is no longer in an economic collapse and rising social unrest has been quelled. Blessed Be the Founding Fathers. Blessed Be the Addend.

Each of you must choose. To the left is those who support and will participate in the purge and to the right is those who do not; pro-purge and anti-purge respectively. This warehouse is the only neutral zone in the city, except during Purge Night. Blessed be America, a nation reborn.

Once he steps down, a woman takes his place and explains further, though in a less formal fashion. Everyone must choose. Pro-purge is anyone that will be actively participating - this means murder, specifically, though all other crimes are still allowed. There will be consequences for anyone who chooses the pro side and then doesn’t purge properly. Anyone who is in full support of the purge and completes three successful purges may go home. Those who choose the anti-purge side, anyone that doesn’t want to kill or believe in the NFFA’s right to purge, are not given this same incentive. All are given time to think it out. They can speak to one another for as long as they need. Any unrest will be not be tolerated.

After everyone has chosen, the anti-purge side exit and are picked up in old buses and vans to be taken to old apartment buildings with basic necessities; there is no reception but are told exactly how it is by veteran Purge survivors. They must get a job and earn money to protect themselves during The Purge that cycles every two months. Those who choose the pro-purge side are chauffeured in limousines to fancy hotels with even nicer accommodations and are welcomed with an extravagant party as well as motivation to purge: you have to purge.

→ Advertising is a Purger’s Right

Throughout the year - and especially now that there is a two month period of peace and preparation - all citizens are allowed to advertise their needs as is sanctioned by the United States Government by any means; Craigslist, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, newspapers, the big screens in Times Square, etc. These advertisements may come in many forms, such as a person looking to pay another (with very specific appearance and background) to allow them to purge them. Payments are legal and binding. The purger might request that they kill, torture, and other various acts—all is legal on Purge Night. Advertisements may be as simple as looking for a partner to purge with or someone to help fortify a house or vehicle. There is no limit to what advertisements may be made. It is the right of every citizen. Blessed be America, a nation reborn.

[Oh. That's...that's definitely bowing. Cali looks around to make sure too much attention isn't on them. She only sees a few people looking, but that's enough for her to step in and try to usher her new Knight friend into standing back upright.]

How many of what people? The ones who keep the Purge going?

[It feels like she should know that. Like it's been on a test at school. Somehow, she's drawing a blank right now. So she shrugs.]

I don't know. A lot? More than you can safely kill on your own.

[Oh. Is bowing not proper in this place? Ingra straightens with a frown. Clearly there is a great deal she will have to learn, or she'll never get anywhere. Her plans are forming slowly. First she'll need a guide. Cali will do.

The second step is convincing the girl to go along with it.]

How many?

[Ingra asks it gently, smiling.]

You can guess. You are a smart girl, aren't you?

[personal profile] safehold 2017-04-28 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, if she's going to fluff her ego and call her smart...]

A lot.

[She says it again, smirking just a little.]

There's dozens of them, all of them level 10 or higher. That means you can't touch them on Purge nights. They have agents out there, more than I could even guess. Which means you're crazy if you try going after them.
ilexiona: (005)

[personal profile] ilexiona 2017-04-28 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I understand. They are like noble sons. [And their wives, presumably. Inga considers this with a frown. Noble sons and their guards. They won't fight her in honorable combat and thus will have to die in underhand ways.] Noble sons can fall out of favor. How do they become...what did you call it, level 10?

They become politicians. Or government employees.

[Her eyes look over to the Republican senator guy that gave the initial address.]

He's probably a 9 or 10. Anyone that works for the government at any level is given a ranking. If you're a 10 to 15, no one can touch you during the Purge without punishment. But you can bet they're killing people.

[Her voice stays quiet and calm, not wanting anyone to overhear.]
ilexiona: (015)

[personal profile] ilexiona 2017-04-28 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
So they are free to fight, but not to die.

[That hardly seems fair. Inga eyes the man who gave the speeches with cool contempt.]

You do not have a ranking, then.

[Which means that when the time comes, Cali will be fair game. Inga looks her up and down. Not a very big girl, is she? Too skinny. Perhaps she does not fight. Perhaps she simply hides and waits for the night to end. That seems like an option. This place is large, after all. Even if it were contained in a building like this, there are still places to hide.]

How do you stay alive, Cali? A smart girl like you must have a plan.

My mom and I usually board everything up and stay quiet. It worked every year but this last one.

[She shrugs, looking away. The subject is one that makes her more than a little tense and anxious, and she doesn't want to talk about it too much.]

I'm not sure if it will be that easy here. I guess I'll get a gun or something.

[Luckily, they still have some downtime before anything goes down. She'll have time to prepare.]
ilexiona: (005)

[personal profile] ilexiona 2017-04-28 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
[Hiding, then. Inga doesn't ask where Cali's mother is. It seems unwise.]

What is a gun?

[A weapon, Inga assumes. Something Cali can use to protect herself.]
safehold: (Default)

[personal profile] safehold 2017-04-28 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Cali eyes her warily, but doesn't say anything about her not knowing. She guesses it makes sense for a knight to not have any idea what anything but a sword is.]

It's a weapon. You put bullets in it and when you pull the trigger, you can kill people.

[Presumably. Assuming you have good enough aim.]

It works from a distance, so it's better than a sword, I guess.
ilexiona: (Default)

[personal profile] ilexiona 2017-04-28 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Inga frowns. A trigger implies a projectile mechanism of some sort.] And you know how to use this weapon?

[If it's common here, then Inga supposes she had best lean to use it as well.]
safehold: (Default)

[personal profile] safehold 2017-04-28 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
A little.

[She doesn't want to admit that she's only used a gun once, and that she had terrifyingly good aim.]

I could use more practice but guns are expensive.

[It's not like they just give them out to people.]
ilexiona: (002)

[personal profile] ilexiona 2017-04-28 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
[The better weapons usually are. Inga's armor is worth a small fortune even without her sword.

She eyes Cali up and down with frank appraisal.]

You are too skinny. Too small for a sword. But I can teach you how to use a pike. Make you a good little warrior. I do this and you will show me how these guns work.

[She was confident Cali would see the benefit to it.]

[personal profile] safehold 2017-04-28 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
[It sounds like a fair trade to her. So she nods, and looks around to make sure that no one's listening in to what they're saying. Agreeing to this could paint huge targets over both of their heads.]

We'll have to find somewhere private to do it. It won't be easy to do, but we'll figure something out. That's assuming we can even get our hands on a gun.

[Or a pike for that matter. Cali isn't even sure she knows what one is, now that she thinks about it.]

[personal profile] ilexiona 2017-04-29 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You'll find a way. [Inga smiles. Compliment someone enough and either they'll distrust her intimately or find some way of proving her right. And she has a feeling that Cali wants to fight.] I can make you a pike. It is not so hard. And not so hard to learn, either.

[Not compared to a sword, at least.]
